写真のクラウドストレージ vs ローカルストレージ:どちらが安全?
Your photo library is irreplaceable. Should you trust it to the cloud, keep it local, or both?
The 3-2-1 Backup Rule
The gold standard of data protection:
3 copies of your data, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy off-site.
For photos, this translates to: Phone + External Drive + Cloud Backup.
Cloud Storage Comparison
| Service | Free Tier | 200 GB | 2 TB | Privacy Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud | 5 GB | $2.99/mo | $9.99/mo | Apple ecosystem lock-in |
| Google Photos | 15 GB | $2.99/mo | $9.99/mo | Google scans for content |
| OneDrive | 5 GB | Included w/ Office 365 | $6.99/mo | Good Windows integration |
| Dropbox | 2 GB | N/A | $11.99/mo | Limited free tier |
Local Storage Options
| Type | Capacity | Cost | Lifespan | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| External HDD | 2-5 TB | $50-100 | 3-5 years | Medium |
| External SSD | 1-4 TB | $60-300 | 5-10 years | Fast |
| NAS (Network) | 4-16 TB | $200-600 | 5+ years | Fast |
| USB Flash Drive | 64-256 GB | $10-30 | 2-5 years | Slow |
The Hybrid Approach (Recommended)
iPhone Photos (HEIC)
│
├─→ iCloud / Google Photos (automatic, daily sync)
│ = Off-site backup #1
│
├─→ Monthly batch convert to JPEG via heicgo
│ └─→ External SSD archive
│ = Local backup
│
└─→ Annual archive to second external drive
= Off-site backup #2 (keep at work/family house)
HEIC’s Role in Storage Strategy
HEIC files are ~50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. For cloud storage with per-GB pricing, this matters:
| Library Size | HEIC (iCloud) | JPEG (Original quality) |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 photos | ~2.5 GB | ~5 GB |
| 5,000 photos | ~12.5 GB | ~25 GB |
| 10,000 photos | ~25 GB | ~50 GB |
| 50,000 photos | ~125 GB | ~250 GB |
Keep HEIC for cloud backup (saves space and cost). Convert to JPEG only for local archives you plan to access with non-Apple software. Use heicgo.com for batch conversion when creating those archives.
The Biggest Risk: Single Point of Failure
The most dangerous setup: all photos on one phone with no backup. Phones get lost, stolen, or broken every day.
The second most dangerous: all photos in one cloud account. Accounts get hacked, locked, or terminated.
Always maintain at least one local AND one cloud backup.
